Connecting through Pride in Our Schools

November 2006

WE GOT MAIL TODAY

Today (November 10th, 2006) we got some pictures and stories from the "Cars Group" who are from England.  There are nine pupils in the "Cars Group".  They told us about themselves.  They told us about what hobbies they like, what age they are, what their names are, how many in their families and what pets they have at home.  Their teacher’s name is Miss West.  They made a map about England to show us where their school is.  We were very excited when we got the mail today.  Teacher also got a card.  We are looking forward to writing back to the Cars Group soon.

THE BOOKFAIR

The book fair was on for five days in our school.  It was really good.  There were about five hundred books.  I bought three books, two for me and one for my cousin because he stayed at my house for two days.  The books are called Cars, Exposure and Experiments and the one I bought my cousin is called Charlie Cooks Favourite Book.  I think he will like it.  The Exposure and Experiments is the best. It is a set with a book which has experiments on either side.  The Cars book is a silver book, it tells you how fast cars go and some of the cars are really old.  The oldest car is an eighty model.  It was made in 1895.  My friend bought a book called One Hundred Gross Facts about the Human Body.

This is how you say Hello in Irish… Dia dhuit. My name is Ailbhe. We have four classrooms and a hall in our school. We got new boards last year. Our school is yellow. We also got a new extension last year. Our school was built in 1956, so it is 50 years old now. Our school is in the country. There are trees out the back of the school. There is a community centre beside our school. There is a green flag out the front of the school. We do litter patrol to pick up any papers around the school. A speech-and-drama teacher comes to our school. A few years ago a mother came and helped us paint the shed. It looks like under the sea.

At school it is fun. I Like it. But I don’t like getting homework at all. It's boring getting homework. If it’s raining we stay in side and play a game. And if it is not raining we go out and play a game. I like playing out side because it is fun. I play with my friends all the time.

Dia dhuit, that means hello in our country. We speak English and Irish in our school. The bell rings at 9:30 every morning and that is the start of our day. All the boys and girls run to their classrooms. Then we change into our slippers and start our prayers. My teacher is called Mr. De Burca. He is a nice teacher and he loves poetry and stories. We get homework every day, but not on Fridays. Today, we are doing art and P.E. We got a new tracksuit to wear on Monday, Thursday and Friday. There are eight girls and two boys. I have lots of friends in my school. I have a sister in a bigger class then me. You should check our website.

Buchloe is a community raised to city status in 1954, lying in Ostallgäu district in Bavaria. Together with the neighbouring communities of Jengen, Lamerdingen and Waal, Buchloe belongs to the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft ("administrative community") of Buchloe.

Geography and transport

Buchloe lies right on Bundesautobahn 96 (Munich - Buchloe - Memmingen - Lindau) with interchanges with Bundesstraße ("Federal Highway") 12 (Lindau by way of Munich and Passau to Philippsreut) and describes itself as the "Gateway to the Allgäu". The town is an important railway hub for the Munich – Kempten – Lindau line on the Allgäubahn (KBS 970) and for the Augsburg – Memmingen line with its connections to IC and direct connection into Switzerland by EC.

Coat of arms

Buchloe has quite a simple coat of arms, being a shield, party per pale, gules and argent. It was bestowed on the town officially in 1834, although it is based on a much earlier design that was already in use about 1500. The colours are those of the State of Augsburg, to which Buchloe belonged from 1311 to 1803, when it was absorbed into Bavaria. In the late nineteenth century, Buchloe assumed a different coat of arms, still a party per pale (ie a shield split straight down the middle) and silver on the right half, but gold on the left half with two leafy twigs – likely meant to be beech as the town's name comes from Buche, the German word for beech – twined about each other to form an emblem shaped rather like a section sign ("§"). In 1950, however, the original arms were officially restored.[1]

Town development

Amalgamation

In 1971 and 1972, the communities of Lindenberg and Honsolgen mit Hausen were amalgamated into Buchloe.

Culture and sightseeing

Heimatmuseum Buchloe

South of Buchloe is the Buchloe people's observatory, at which there are regular observations of the heavens.

Economy

A well known business in the town is the car tuning company Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH und Co. Another is the Huber Karwendel Works, which makes the well known Exquisa cream cheese. Furthermore, the Moksel Group has its headquarters in Buchloe.

Security

Buchloe has a police station and a volunteer fire brigade with various fire engines. Within the town are also found a Bavarian Red Cross office and a chapter of the Wasserwacht ("Water Watch", or lifeguard service).
