History of Lubicz

The Commune Council of Lubicz passes the emblem and the seal of the commune of Lubicz on June 29th, 2001. The emblem represents St. Andrew dressed in a red gown, holding a diagonal cross all set in a blue background.

The emblem refers to heraldic tradition of Lubicz, which possessed its own seal as a commune as early as the end of the 14th century. The confirmation of this fact dates back to circa 1400 according to “Pieczęcie i herby miast pomorskich” written in 1939 by Marian Gumowski (a study of the seals and emblems of Pomeranian cities, which can be found in the colletion of the Nicolaus Copernicus University Library). Basing on the information included in the book, the colours and the design of both the emblem and the seal were established by Stanisław Lackowski.

The seal from a document from circa 1400:

THE HISTORY OF THE COMMUNE BY MARIAN GUMOWSKI

Lubicz is a village located by the Drwęca River in the poviat of Toruń. Originally it was a borough, where in 1292 Salome, a Kujawian princess, ruled. It was conquerred by the Teutonic Order. In 1457 Lubicz was joined to Polish territories as a gift from the king. Lubicz has never become a city, nonetheless, it has got its seal as a commune from the Teutonic times, i.e. 14th century. The seal represents St. Andrew holding a diagonal cross surrounded by the inscription: S: COMUNITAS: VILLE: LUBICZ. It was found on two documents without any dates on them; yet, they date back to circa 1400 and were found in the Archives of Toruń. St. Andrew appears to have been the saint patron of the local church and the seal itself  may be the oldest example of a village seal in Poland. There are no other seals known to have come from this village.

THE FLAG

The commune has got a flag. It is rectangular and it consists of three equal vertical bands of white, red, and blue. The flag is raised during the Commune Council’s sessions and during all commune ceremonies.

History of our school

The village of Lubicz was founded after 1772. In 1827 there were 19 houses and 187 inhabitants in Lubicz. They were mostly estate workers and wealthy tradesmen. There was no school in Lubicz, until one  was founded in October 1919. It was a school with classes from 1 to 4, and with only one teacher employed. The school was located in the house of the Odyńces – Poles coming from Lithuania.

In 1922 the school was relocated into another building, and at first four, then five teachers were employed. Together with the Primary School no. 2, the School for Working Adults was created, a mandolin orchestra, a brass band consisting of 36 people, a photographic circle, and many others.

On June 24, 1962, the Primary School no. 2 was given the name of the international hero – Tadeusz Kościuszko. In spring 1964 the enlargement of the school began. Together with the gym and the kitchen base, it was handed over for use on June 24, 1968.

In 1997 the school was moved to a modern building at 23 Piaskowa Street. In 1999, apart from the Primary School, the Junior High School no. 1 was set up.

On September 1, 2002, the School Union was brought into existence. It consists of the Primary School no. 2 and the Junior High School no. 1. At the moment, there are about 980 pupils at school, and there are 75 teachers employed. Since 1997 Andrzej Siemianowski, M.A. has been the headmaster of the school.

TADEUSZ KOSCIUSZKO
(1746 - 1817)

Tadeusz Kosciuszko is one of the most recognized Polish people in history. The American consider him to be a national hero as he participated in the Independence War in 1775-1783. Nine years later he took part in the war between Poland and Russia. In 1794 he became the Chief of Armed Forces in the uprising, which was named after him. He won a battle of Raclawice, then he lost at Szczekociny, and finally he was taken a prisoner in the battle of Maciejowice. He stayed in Paris when Dabrowski’s Legions were formed. Kosciuszko represented the legions before the French Government. He disagreed to help in establishing the Grand Duchy of Warsaw as he was the opponent of Napoleon and Napoleon’s policy. Kosciuszko died in Switzerland. He is buried in Wawel Royal Castle.

Our School Anthem and Logo

The logo of the school was designed by a Primary School teacher. It symbolizes friendship and openness to all who ever was, is and will be connected with the school.

Praca jest nasza nauka
po wiedze segaj z zapalem
Innego celu nie szukaj
Lecz ucz sie, ucz sie wytrwale
Po ksiazke siegaj codziennie
I bierz z bohatera przyklady
Badz pilny - pracuj sumiennie
Posluchaj piesni tej rady

W zyciu nielatwo Ci bedzie
bez wiedzy i zawodu
Czlek madry potrzebny jest wszedzie
On jest przyszloscia narodu
My Polski jesteśmy warci
I swiatu pokazemy
Na slowach Kosciuszki wsparci
Przykladem wiernie idziemy
