Seven School Wonders

Connecting through Pride in Our Schools

Our school's 6th grade pupils who study Swedish played a scene about Lucia 13th of December 2007. For  a start we played it in our school's hall. After that we visited two old people's homes and brought joy and light with us. They liked it very much and offered us some juice and cookies.

There is an old legend which tells that Lucia was a beautiful and noble young lady who lived in Syracusa in Italy. Lucia gave her fortune to the Christian poor people to thank God when her mother became well. Lucia`s fiancé was a heathen and he had a negative attitude to the Christianty which he thought to be dangerous to the Roman Empire.

When the fiancé knew what Lucia had done, she revealed her bride to the Roman governor. Lucia was persistent, she didn´t give upp her faith although she was forced and pressed. The governor sentenced her to death.

It was amazing: the fire couldn´t hurt Lucia, the waves couldn´t drown her, and the wild, hungry beasts didn`t do anything to her. At last she was killed by a
sword. Lucia carries a red belt which is a symbol for this bloody mischief. According to a legend Lucia was killed on December 13th, 303.

In the Medieval Times people in the Nordic Countries thought that the night before the 13th of December was the darkest and longest of the year. Lucia brings light with her and wants us to listen to the message of Christmas.
